Nomination Process
Nomination Process Overview
Each year, the MLK Scholars Program welcomes outstanding scholars to MIT for visiting appointments. Each cohort of scholars is selected to represent diverse interests across and outside of the disciplines represented at the Institute. Scholars are often faculty from other institutions, but they are also independent practitioners, industry professionals, political leaders, artists, and others working to define and redefine their fields in Dr. King’s vision.
Each scholar is nominated by a member of the MIT faculty. The nomination process starts in the fall and continues through the following February. The MIT faculty host works with candidates to collect information needed for a nomination before filling out an online nomination form, which requires the candidate’s resume or CV, a letter of nomination from the faculty member, and other materials. All nominees who meet the eligibility criteria are considered equitably, regardless of race, ethnicity or national origin.
Nominations are reviewed by the MLK Faculty Advisory Committee. Upon approval, the head of the academic department of the faculty nominee will send an offer to the candidate stating the terms of their appointment.
Appointments are made as visiting faculty, visiting engineer/scientist/scholar, or postdoctoral fellow in a department, lab, center, or other appointing unit at MIT. Initial appointments are for a semester or a year, with the possibility that a scholar can be nominated for a renewal of up to one additional year. Any nomination for a second year visiting appointment must be accompanied by a cost-sharing plan provided by the host department.
